THE EN 420 STANDARD
Hand protection is essential. The EN 420 standard defines the general requirements for protective gloves. This is a basic mandatory standard which applies to all so-called “protective” gloves. They are therefore all EN 420 standardized, but have at least a second standard. This is because the EN 420 standard describes the general requirements for a protective glove, but it cannot be used alone. It is systematically associated with a specific European standard appropriate for protective gloves.
DETAILS ON THE EN-420 REGULATION
The fundamental design requirements of a protective glove, namely size, comfort or even dexterity are defined according to European standard EN 420. This sets out the various design requirements making it possible to standardize the manufacture of a glove. of protection and to harmonize the criteria of manufacture, thus allowing consumers to make a judicious choice among the various models of gloves and manufacturers on the market.
Several design requirements are designated within this standard:
Manufacturer identification and product marking – Gloves must be marked with the following information in a visible and indelible manner:
- Manufacturer's name
- Glove size
- CE marking
- Manufacturer's designation
- Marking of pictograms corresponding to the standards obtained and the performance levels claimed.
Safety – Protective gloves must also meet certain safety criteria:
- The chromium content must be below the detection threshold, ie 3 mg / kg.
- The extractable protein content of natural rubber gloves must be tested according to EN 455-3.
- The pH should be neutral (between 3,5 and 9,5).
Respect for agreed sizes – The size of a protective glove must be expressed in European sizes.
Dexterity – Regardless of its standard, a protective glove must offer maximum dexterity. A test determines the level of dexterity. It consists of noting the smallest diameter of a pin that can be grasped with the gloved hand three times in 30 seconds. The smaller the diameter, the higher the level of dexterity (5 performance levels, with level 5 being the best).
Permeability and absorption capacity – Where possible, gloves should be permeable and have good water vapor absorption capacity.
Manufacturer information – Provided by the manufacturer when the glove is placed on the market, this information is available upon request and includes:
- The name and address of the manufacturer, or where applicable, his representative
- The name of the glove
- The size range available
- The reference of the specific standards concerned
- The pictograms as well as the performance levels
- Warnings about likely problems
- Allergenic substances known and possibly present in the composition
- Instructions for use and maintenance
ADDITIONAL STANDARDS CONCERNING WORK GLOVES
As mentioned at the start of this page, the EN 420 standard cannot be used alone. It is associated with additional standards, some examples of which you will find below:
- Standard EN 388 against the mechanical risks understanding the risks abrasion, cut, tear and drilling.
- Standard EN 407 against the thermal hazards, the fire and the flames.
- Standard EN 381-7 against the cut risks chainsaw and other chain saws.
- Standard EN 374 against the chemical hazards and the Microorganisms.
