Regulatory context in public lighting

More efficient LED optics

Traditional and LED luminaires also differ in their optical design. The light beam produced by a discharge lamp is shaped primarily by the shape of the reflector. In an LED luminaire, lenses placed over the light-emitting diodes shape the photometry. Regarding luminaire efficiency, LEDs once again have the advantage.

The optical design of the lenses allows a wide variety of intensity indicators to be obtained for a single luminaire. For example, the French manufacturer Eclatec offers different lenses depending on the type of roadway to be lit.

LED technology in public lighting

LED technology is not only more efficient light sources, but also more easily controllable and dimmable luminaires, as well as more efficient optics. It is all of these cumulative factors that explain the significant gains in energy consumption compared to a traditional public lighting installation.
